Perugia Plaza Hotel 實習生
Perugia Plaza Hotel，
Italian Efficiency --- Stories Untold
Perugia Plaza Hotel Intern
Foreign Language and Literature Department Hsin Yi, Yu
It was in the middle of a hot summer day, wondering in the department building when the billboard accidentally caught my eyes, found out that there’s a program that’s three days until the deadline. Three days, I hustled and bustled finally drove myself into a mousetrap that I have never expected. With a, not even average resume, we were paired up with companies after an unofficial meeting with whoever that was, still muddled, we started a whole journey to unbelievable circumstances.
Perugia Plaza Hotel, the four-star hotel where I spent 5 months of my internship, it is not glamorous like those luxurious five stars but the services and cuisine deserved the praise. During the time, I have tried different kinds of work such as translation, decoration, and research, as a student from the language department, everything was new to me no matter with sales or management. I was lucky to get a chance to get a taste of a B2B exhibition --- TTG Rimini (Travel Trade Gazette,) the travel fair was nothing like I’ve experienced, organized and exclusive. With the upcoming of Christmas, I picked up some old tricks, did decorations and design menus and after that I was eventually able to have some days off and head to the highlight of the program --- Christmas Break.
Before traveling I had a lot in mind, narrowing it down to two countries was the best plan to really experience a tip of the different cultures. Christmas markets were not as breathtaking as expected, there was not much difference between plenty marketplaces we went, yet both Paris and Berlin became cities I would really love going back. As a student in language and literature, I had some opportunities getting to know more about different cultures and the histories behind them, furthermore, I was a big fan of art since little, so the visiting of museums, monuments and galleries fits me just right. We hadn’t had enough time at the Louvre to finish it, yet Musée d’Orsay won my heart the moment I entered it; Berlin was quite different from the romance arrogant atmosphere in Paris, it’s more down to earth with the wild combination of history and modern art.
After two weeks of Christmas holiday, we returned to work, though nothing goes as the contracts were signed, nor anything we were told the companies treated us well and do as much as they could to help us no matter in life or at work. Italians were expected no to have an average skill of English and yes they’ve proved it right, so with all the language barriers in between making it harder for some of us to even communicate with tutors at work. Italian classes were labeled on the brochure and were actually given out, yet nothing had changed after two weeks of the unprofessional useless class. Eventually, we had to try to negotiate with the companies, due to the lack of concerns and responsibilities from both ends of the program, to find a way making possibilities attending courses. And these were just to start with.
Life wasn’t really going so well here in Italy, yet I managed to find loads of friends and nice people, we concurred and been through a lot together, shared laughter and anger, learned from unbelievable experiences, grow with strength in mind and stress in our hearts. Though we hadn't had the chance to make the best out of the program, we saw the worst of it, students don't really learn anything and companies hadn't profit either, I believe with a better program it would have benefited a lot more. Nevertheless, with all the good and bad, best and worst, we’ve all been through and survived, it would be a record on my resume and defiantly a memory of a lifetime.
