(義大利 Archistudio實習生 李同學)
When I decided to pursue my postgraduate degree, my senior was a member of the third batch of TIP. We just met for a few weeks, and she was preparing for her trip to Italy. She hasn’t told me much about school life as a postgraduate student but introduced me this program.
Actually this is not the first time for me to be in western country. Years back in my childhood, I’ve been to Italy once but I was too young. I didn’t understand the great history of Italy, and I couldn’t even enjoy the wond erful scenery. As I grown up, I wish I can go back to Italy again. However, there were some bad memories before and influenced on me a lot when I was a little. I was bullied by some foreigners and that frightened me a lot, and after that I refused to make the step to go to other countries. So when I got this chance, I didn’t hesitate. I am very thankful to this prestige organization for giving me this chance. It was not only a big decision to make but also change my life.
Experienced and encountered a lot of unfamiliar situation and all the first time of the journey were exploring and exciting. I actually don’t know how to get along with girls. Unfortunately, I’m the only guy of the program. Everyone thinks I am a lucky guy, but the truth is that I had a really headache during time. I tried to believe it’s the best chance for practicing, actually it was. Because of all the girls, I was always friendly during these five months. I also become a better man and never say something vulgarism anymore.
One of the girl and I from the group work together in Enemov. At the beginning, our tutor, Mirko made a brief introduction regarding the company’s operation, and he assigned us to work with Michela, a full-time employee in the company. Then we became her assistants. She wanted us to translate the E-commerce to English of Enemov with another local intern. I enjoyed my first cooperation with Italians. We’ve done everything except the catalog, the company decided to outsource the translation of products' catalog because there are too complicated.
The next task was to look for suppliers, which like manufactures electric bicycle. Enemov’s E-bikes are purchased from Italian supplier, but made in China. The company wants to import E-bike from manufacturers directly in order to cut the cost and make a better price. In this task, first thing to consider was the price. Seeking for manufacturers from Taiwan and China was not easy. Trying to contact the manufacturers, to get all of the product catalogs, quotation and MOQ was challenging. During the work, I noticed that I have some problems need to be corrected. For this work, I needed to archive the data and discussed it with Michela then passed it to Mirko for approval. Beforehand, I have no idea what procurement was. But this was a wonderful experience to learn how to contact with suppliers.
The last work that we got was to make a proposal of TIP website design. As a team, we set our goals, divided the work and provided each other related and essential information. The team analyzed the previous version of website and conducted interviews to conclude with the suggestions. Axure was the software used to make a prototype of the website. Fortunately, the proposal was finished earlier than expected.
Leaving from comfort zone like home for five months, I didn’t only learn from work, but also the Italian lifestyle allowed me to be a backpacker. In the past, I was afraid to speak in English, never took public transportation that often, didn’t know how to cook, didn’t want to take the initiative to meet people. To stay in Italy, I needed to speak English at work and took the public transportation to work, needed to cook for myself, and those changes gave me the courage to make the first step of traveling alone and be a backpacker. I went to a lot of places, included my dream country Iceland, different cities in Italy, flashback and re-experience of my childhood memories in Rome. Created wonderful memories around the world such as Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and so on. No matter where you are, experience the true meaning of travelling, and happiness has to be shared. Sharing your life to new friends, experience to old friends, listening to someone’s story and write down your own. Happiest memories need be created, and shared with your loved ones, memories cannot be copied, story can't fully share, yet they can feel the joy that you had.
Until now, It is still hard to believe that I could book and contact with hostel in a foreign country, knew how to take the public transportation by myself, cook by myself, and sent emails to German Foreign Office ask for my residence permit. I couldn’t even understand why and how can I be so calm when the baggage was stolen on the train. After that, unbelievable things happened one after another.
If there is someone asking me again, whether would I afraid to take the next step or not. The answer is definitely “Yes. But not much.” Because of my improvement make me think that I have the courage to go next step.
I can’t remember since when that I stopped moving because of complaining a lot when I look back. In Taiwan, the ambience of the society taught us how to complain. Most of the citizens complain about economy recession. In Italy, you can hear more complain regarding unemployment. However, there’s still some people who want to change, they decide to adjust into the environment. They have the initiative to learn something new and even to work abroad.
I’m sincerely grateful for the effort of Professor Hsu on this program. Not only giving me this chance, but also teaching and letting me see my shortcoming that I have to correct.
Fear is not the one we have to be afraid of, all we need to do is get away from getting involved in danger. Complaining is useless, we have to be aggressive on pursuing your dream. Be serious on every step and be careful and physical on learning in life.
