國立雲林科技大學 應用外語系 洪同學
Since I am a student major in applied foreign languages, proficient in different languages is one of the necessary requirement. I expect myself to sharpen my oral speaking skills in Italian via having an internship in Italy. Besides, to get more familiar with working with foreigners is also a part of goal I want to achieve. It’s because trades among countries have been frequently nowadays. If I could get used to interact with foreigners, I would be able to adapt to the workplace sooner after I graduate. Finally, languages always stand for different way of ponder over. Finding out the background of Italian culture is also what I am looking forward to. I feel it will be a totally different experience in my life.
To fulfill the dream to come to Italy, I have done a lot of effort. I finished all of the compulsory degrees in advance when I was in junior. Even if my curriculum was already full enough, I commuted to take Italian courses from Yunlin to Taichung every Friday. As for the expense of being abroad, although my parents were willing to offer me financial supports, I still took three part-time jobs to save money by myself because I know that they always want to buy another big house so that in the future when my sister and I get married, we still can bring our husbands and children back together for having a reunion with them during the Chinese New Year. At the moment, I was already over 20 years old and it is the time to be responsible for my own dreams. Instead of asking for money from my parents, I decided to make it myself. Meanwhile, not to miss the most important activity in DAFL─ annual drama performance, I promise to take over the duty of the host. Finally, before departure, I studied hard and passed the graduation threshold of the TOEIC test. That was my junior year in the university.
I will always remember the day I arrived in Italia. On the way to our dormitory, we stopped by a bar which is usually a place for coffee in Italia. We were going to have our first breakfast in this country, and I also thought it was a good chance to practice my Italian, which I have learned for totally six months. However, thing didn’t go what I had thought. However, Italians speak very fast. In most of the time, I haven’t perceived yet, they just finish their sentence. Though I got the croissant that I want to eat, the process was still unforgettable. After we get to our dormitory, we bought some necessaries in the supermarket. Originally, I wanted to buy sparkling water, but once I tried it, I knew it was the wrong one. What I bought was soda. Speaking of being aboard, most of the people may consider the cases mentioned above are normal. On the contrary, they did depress me because I used to be a person who always lets everything is under control. On the couple of days after that, TA and I was busying for dealing with a lot of important document, such asbus tickets, ID card, resident permission because I was nominated as a leader. Besides, I needed to book the train tickets for our trip on weekends. To tell the truth, I did learn a lot. It’s even hard to anticipate all of the obstacles we may encounter, especially in aboard. There is a saying goes, “make hay while the sunshines.” It means we had better do some precaution for potential problem. However, I would now say it is not entirely correct because we also need the ability to deal with the challenges suddenly pop up. We better have both competencies.
According to my work pattern, the most impressive part was “sending emails”. I remember there was a day my tutor asked me to write a development letter to potential customers. The models are in German or Italian. I was supposed to translate it into English and Chinese. However, the last time I practice writing commercial letter was in senior high school. At that moment, I was preparing for the license of the international trade management. Afterward, I had no longer touched it again. I spent some time searching online for reminding the format and the rules of the E-mail, both in English and Chinese. I know that there is not necessarily someone will teach in the workplace because everyone is busy. Workplace is not like school. In the school, mistakes are permitted in most of the time, but not in the workplace. The competency of self-improvement is very important. Before asking a question, it is better to think whether it is constructive, or if the answer can be found on the internet in advance. You are how you act; in the workplace, questions you ask show the level of intention.
I would like to compare the technology company to marathon. It seems we are competing with the time every day. I remember once. My tutor asked me to write a development letter to potential customers the day before. On the day he asked me to write another E-mail the transportation and accommodation information. Besides, it might be done by the time we leave. The E-mail is required from customers in the United States. I am very glad that I have a tutor with wisdom and sense of empathy. Whenever I discuss the content of E-mail, brochure, and other items, he always asks me “How do you think?” he is willing to know my viewpoints. We make decisions together after discussion; we talk over what I have. I once read an article on the Internet. The author spread some methods of finding the right supervisor or boss. One of them was to find the one with some characteristics that you want to learn from. My tutor always treat people and things sincerely which I truly admire. It is also my honour to follow him.
During the internship, I completely experience the work of sales and marketing specialists. This is the original occupation I would like to get a shot. As far as I am concerned, I firmly convince it is the type of job I want to engage in my future career. Since the system of job responsibility is more feasible for my personality, to become a sales and marketing specialist couldn’t be suitable for me at all. I prefer the job I can arrange my time and decide the order of pieces of stuff.
I hope the wonderful experience in Italy can last for my future career. After my life in Italy, I had a better understanding of myself. I am fond of staying in different countries, especially for a long period, discovering some distinct things among cultures, and making friends with people from other countries. Thus, I prefer my future career involving this kind of offer. What’s more, since I am capable enough of finishing tasks by myself and I always have my own ideas of arranging my time, I feel I’m suitable for the exempt employee rather than non-exempt I suppose that having a job with high freedom enables me to maintain the lifestyle I like.
Recently, the job I am looking for will provide chances to contact people from all around the world frequently. I already owned the abilities of Chinese, English, and Italian. I also started Turkish recently. I want to be an international sales representative in the technology industry. Though my knowledge about technology may not be as professional as those who have engineering backgrounds, I have great confidence in my languages, negotiation, coordination and learning skills. I hope can make a tremendous distribution to the team of my company.
