(義大利 Brantabee 實習生 李同學)
The wander in youth is a lifetime Nutrient.” -Lin, Huai-min
On hearing this, I enrolled in TIP program despite under the pressure of completing my graduate thesis, and heading to Italy, a place I admired for so long. However, it takes a lot of effort to fulfill your dream. I’ve been busy preparing for funds, documents, intensive language course from the day informed to the departure date. And it is a beginning of a new struggle after arriving. I had experienced the strong weary after daily works, frustration due to language/culture differences and discrimination, numerous unimaginable accidents while traveling. The program itself is not perfect as well, it could be improved by former experiences and have details settled after negotiation in many aspects. But it is the winding that makes a life wonder, after all my expectation is nothing but a pure admiration, so the gain is also beyond imagination.
During work, it is my pleasure to join Brantabee, a company that suits me very well. Especially my tutor Diego and Massimo trusted me so much that willing to assign me tasks with great importance and true value to the company. They also tried to find tasks that can make me grow and help me some way in the future. Therefore I started as an interpreter and market search assistant, attended in some meetings and lectures in both English and Italian, translated company website, helped in a partner company in video conferences, searched for potential contractors and learn to find price information and import figures…they are experiences cannot gained in class. My colleges are also kind people who willing to offer me a ride every day after they know there’s no bus to the company. They care about my life and safety at all times, I am also honored to have the ability to bring some laughter in return.
In life, I learned to put myself in a slower pace; sit and chat like an Italian or have a late dinner when train delays. As for cooking for the first time, we found that with the great quality of Mediterranean food, it’s hard to ruin a cuisine and the cooking technique does not worth a worry. Hence, a person does not care about food before like me can finally appreciate the sooth ability of food after a tiresome day and realized that gourmet could be a leading character of life. Walking along central city we can even find that monuments are everywhere, every shop or wall could a part of an ancient city wall. Contrary to the firm, distant protection of monuments in Taiwan, Italians actually live in monuments and make them touchable. Therefore, they are free from the worry of traditions being forgotten or no one remembers the stories. History changes with time to another form that still closely connected to locals’ life and remains alive.
“The place you had been in young age, the impact is a lifetime nutrient. Because you were once there, curiosity would continuous to increase and you can enjoy the accumulated results everywhere…it is of great importance to life, livelihood, and advances and retreats in life; with more experience comes greater vision, and meanwhile finding some things become less important!” -Lin, Huai-min
When traveling, there are more chances to discover a different self. Especially when travel alone, there is actually few time to spend really on one’s own, because you meet all kinds of people on the way, you can see the other side of yourself during the interaction with others by continuously giving and receiving, and restart at every destination. I am lucky to have visited famous spots like Firenze, Cinque Terre, Amalfi, Venezia, and Cortona in Under the Tuscan Sun, the book which helped me pass through my thesis. I also had chance to visit France, United Kingdom and Germany. I found that the lifestyle all over Europe could be vivid and explicit, intangibly expressed in the interaction between two people, it is even considerably inscribed into tangible architectures. For example, in contrary to Taiwan whose street view is quite similar and restrained; In Italy, from the extension way of a street, flagstone on the ground, to the subtle changes in color of the wall, reveals a lot about the history and character of a place. Beautiful sceneries also made me lingered- magnificent colorful houses on the hillside, bright summer colors of Amalfi, the still blue coastline in the rain, sunset under Eiffel Tower, the mountain town in a fog and the castle before a snow. Of course, there are many lost and frustrating moments, but all these panic, content, surprise and the preparation before departure, were accumulated to a collection of memories that can be treasured for a lifetime.
I truly appreciate my parents who had dedicated time, funds and countless love to support me, encouragements from friends and teachers, companions that go through this period together, great company Brantabee, university of Perugia and TIP program who offered me the chance. The harvest at present stage is as far as above, but just like Lin had remarked:
“Today their life is just seeding. For us, we are just sprinkling some seeds into the community.”
