Work:

Life:

I was assigned to an engineering company called PRO-E which provides innovative and value-added solutions, and a full range of services from individual consulting and engineering assignments to management and implementation of complex projects.

For the first month of internship, I started off reading some documents related to green buildings and LEED certification system, which were given by Professor Paolo Taticchi and the boss. Then I was asked to prepare 60 slides of PowerPoint presentation in a week about what I’ve learned on the topic, including the introduction of the LEED certification system, applications and case studies. After the work was done, I have a general understanding of green buildings, and in this condition, I’m able to step in the following works that are requested by professor. Paolo gave me the password to access the Library and Learning Services website of University of East London. On the website, there are lots of databases and e-journals that provide countless articles and materials on all kinds of topics. The reason why he did so is because he wanted me to write a business plan for PRO-E, which mainly concentrates on the market of green buildings. Also, this is the main project for me during the internship. My goal was to find articles and any kind of material related to the market of green buildings, not only around the world but also specific in Italy and Taiwan.

It didn’t take me a long time to obtain useful information about the entire marketplace; however, it’s not easy to find detailed information about the market of green buildings in Taiwan and Italy. At last, I spent almost two months searching articles and materials that can really be used in my business plan, and I also spent some time reading through them.

After everything is well prepared, I started to write the business plan. During the time I was working on the business plan, Professor checked my working progress once a week and gave me some helpful feedback. To write a business plan is easier said than done. It wasn’t until the week before we left that I finally done editing 27 pages of business plan and sent the final edition to Professor Paolo Taticchi

Even though it was a hard time for me throughout the whole process and took me a lot of time to have it done, I truly learn a lot on those projects that I’ve done in five months. First, I started out with ignorance, but ended up with a formal business plan, and also a PowerPoint presentation about LEED. Second, it’s not easy to search through huge databases and distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information. Also, it’s a hard work to logically put the entire relevant information together and make my words convincing. Moreover, I learnt to manage my time better because there was deadline for every work and there shouldn’t be any excuse for delay. Most importantly, I realized that whenever I start a new work or job, there would be lots of things new to me for sure, and for that I have to do the study on my own. There won’t be someone like Professor in the future working environment that would patiently teach me everything, so the ability of self-study is truly important.
