Time is always against us. Limited time that we take it for granted because it's free. As I was about to graduate last June, I realized that my time as a student was soon to finish and I thought it would be good to have one last internship. For me, I look at life as an experiment, I was far more willing to take risks, to acknowledge failure, to learn and develop. I’m still young enough to start things all over again even if I failed.
I work at New Chien Te Hang, it's a trading company that provide various kind of metal, ferrous and non-ferrous alloy, refractory materials and refractory equipment. As a student who graduate from International Business major, I would say that I am totally ignorant with their products. What would you expect from someone who has never been in this industry and was introduced to all about their products in a language that’s not even your mother tongue? I was totally helpless.
Everything was pretty tough at the beginning. My company would open courses for their new recruit, and I was lucky enough to have a class with some other newcomers even though I'm pretty sure I was the most clueless person among us. One of my classmates is in her thirties and was previously working in a similar industry, she was brilliant and kept asking difficult questions. Someday our boss would give us courses and threw questions at me, which I hardly ever got it right. I was feeling anxious and stressed but rather than let it dwelled in me, I always remind myself to be calm and focus. During tough time, you could only count on yourself.
I realized that when you are surrounded with more experienced people, rather than feeling intimidated we should use that chance to ask questions and learn more from them. I believe that when one acknowledge their inadequacy, one would learn more than all the others. Perhaps, it would also be nice if we learn by consulting people about the exact issues that hinder you and listen to their story.
During my internship, I was responsible for logistic management and handling documents for export and import. After about 5 months of internship, I was pretty sure that I enjoy my job and decided to become their full-time employee. I was assigned to be in their procurement team.
First of all, for people who aren't familiar with procurement, it's basically about sourcing, acquiring, and negotiating products. It also involves optimizing freight loads to warehouse and maintain company's products supply. For people who are more familiar with supply chain management, procurement actually starts the very first work of supply chain management, and delivers the product all the way to the sales department. It was important because many core products in our company are imported. After I became their full-time employee, I have some new works from my mentor, who was guiding me to handle procurement works, from searching a new potential manufacturer, maintaining our product supply, negotiating for the best payment terms and reviewing sales contract.
I have had some part time jobs and internship before, so I thought I could imagine what would a working environment be like. However, this time I was entrusted with a great responsibility and each decision involves a lot of money. I was always a careless person, but I realized that being careless is really harmful and something I should leave behind. One simple mistake would probably cost so much money, time and reputation. I just can't afford the troubles.
Sometimes in life we are faced with so much difficulties that we might feel like giving up at some point, however, we shouldn't let temporal things take control of our own life and feelings. Look at challenges as something that help you grow, so try to feel happy and appreciate every challenge. Some people might wonder why I'd choose to stay in this industry. The reason is, in my opinion, we should work for a company that we believe in. I believe that what my company sells is genuinely valuable.
In time, everyone will leave university or graduate school, but never stops learning, always have the mindset and diligence of a student. Look at time as something you shouldn't take it for granted. Give your best shot in life!
