Name: Wan-yu Chen
School: National Tsing Hua University
Department: Quantitative Finance Master's Program
Company: Yuanta Futures
Department: Risk Management
My coursework at school focused on financial derivatives, covering topics such as pricing models, quantitative analysis, and risk management. I developed an interest in futures and options while working hard in acquiring knowledge in this area, hoping to pursue a career related to futures and options. Before summer vacation, I learned about Yuanta Financial Holdings’ internship program for graduate students on its website and submitted my application at once. This project research internship not only helped me apply what I have learned in school, but also gave me a chance to acquire hands-on experience in futures trading and recognize the inadequacy of my own skills and knowledge. This was a good opportunity to prepare myself for the workplace before graduation, so I could be more “battle-ready” when I start my first job.
Each intern in the program was assigned a research project and supervised by the department manager. Everyone had to present the results of their research at the end of the internship, which was evaluated by senior managers of the company and university professors. My research was on the application of futures and options in digital finance; using financial technology, I developed quantitative tools that analyzed the volatility of futures and options.
I was very lucky to be acquainted with two managers from the corporate planning department and risk management department. While working on my research, these two managers were earnest mentors and offered their knowledge and expertise without holding back. Their feedback was always helpful. The manager from risk management department assisted me in coming up with a research method that combined futures and options practices, pointing out key areas I needed to pay attention to. The manager from general planning department taught me how to make presentation slides that looked professional and were likely to grab the audience’s attention; he also gave me tips on how to improve my presentation skills. I was very impressed by and grateful of the professionalism and patience of these two managers.
During the internship, I completed a research project and acquired hands-on experience in futures and options. Under the guidance of the department manager, the risk management team built a market information database and automated programs to manage risk. The team also was very generous in sharing their professional insight in futures and options trading with me. As an intern, the things I worked on were limited, but in these two months I discovered my interest in and passion for risk management. Because of this internship, I decided to work toward acquiring a Financial Risk Manger (FRM) certification, boosting my knowledge in risk management before graduation. Luckily, a few months after graduation, I came across a risk management job posting on the Yuanta website and submitted my application without hesitation.
It was a short internship, but the experience acquired was invaluable. I am glad that my hard work was recognized by the risk management manager and I was able to join the risk management team of Yuanta Futures as a full-time member.
